I just thought this up. Since spirits can change into any object animate or inanimate wouldn't they therefore be able to transform into silver or iron or something?

Well, why would we light ourselves on fire?
yea they could..but they would prefer not to..:P.. wouldnt want a particularly distressing and uncomfortable form would they..

even if they change into a metal, they would, but into a fake metal..not pure that is.it would resemble a piece of silver, but it wouldnt actually be..they would kill themselves then!lol..

Hmm...I guess that would make sense...

They would'nt kill themselves but yeah they would'nt be true silver etc.

Thats kinda what I was wondering about. If they did transform into silver wouldn't their essence turn into silver meaning that they weren't technically touching it?
"I don't think I do subtle..."
No their essence would remain unchanged only they would adopt a silver look in a few planes.

OK, I'm sorry, where does it say they can take the guise of an inanimate object?

Everything we see in the books is an animal.
They can be forced into an inanimate object, but only by their master, not of there own volition.

Well, Bart thought someone changed into a footstool....
I think you are right. They can only take the guise of an animal. Plant?

It should be able to work, since they can take on an inanimate guise when forced, so why can't they do it willingly? Unless the magician (master) has to use a spell (like the Indefinite Confinement)? I can't remember very well.

At the very least, they should be able to put an illusion (Glamour?) around themselves, but that wouldn't even affect the djinni in any way, silver or not.

Why does it need to be living? Djinni don't actually have "hearts", technically speaking, so why can't they compact their essences into a plant form?

Good points. Hope someone well versed with the trilogy answers.

Yes, Illusions a Glamours...
Not actual objects.
Just fakes.

Indefinite confinement is involuntary, therefore not needed in this forum.
As for Plants, I find it as possible, but unlikely.

Do I count as "well versed?"

I don't see why they couldn't take the guise of something that's not alive. Bartimaeus has turned into smoke before, right?

Bartimaeus can look like silver, but I don't think he could actually become silver. In the book, when he takes the form of an animal it never says he actually turns into one, its just a disguise. Which is why his true form is seen on other planes.

So acc. to you guys, spirits take take the from of non-living objects, right? But can they move in that case? Like, if they take the form of a chain, can they then strangle their opponent?

No, spirits cannot take the form of an inanimate object.
It's what we just took up two pages talking about.
