gimp is free yes, as are most of the downloads for it. and everything up there you have seen, took me less than ten minutes. some people spend hours on end trying to make something that looks horrible, so i would rather settle for mediocre.

I'm told it's a good piece of software, but it's confusing and difficult to learn. I'll stick with Fireworks.
