As part of the promotional material for a box set containing every single Floyd album, called Oh, By the Way, they've put up this website containing excerpts from each album, all with a fancy graphical interface:

If you're wondering where to start, Saucerful of Secrets, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here have some of my favourite tracks up as previews.

You did not just ask who Pink Floyd are!?

...

Most famous progressive rock group ever. Their album Dark Side of the Moon has sold about 40 million copies and has possibly the most famous album cover ever:

You have almost certainly heard some of their music.

lol...The intro to that site is such a trip.

Maybe I should see it when I'm less tired, but it was making me dizzy.

They did start off as a psychedelic rock band, in the Syd Barrett days..

Psychedelic rock is effectively music to trip to. Lots of weird sounds and effects and stuff. Very weird altogether. Interesting listening even if you're not on acid, though. Only really applies to Floyd's first and possibly second albums.
Progressive rock takes the idea of rock music and expands it. Long, complex instrumentals, often deviating from the verse/chorus song format, often use of unusual instruments, styles taken from outside rock (jazz, classical, ...), etc. Often concept albums with songs linking together musically and thematically, or running completely into each other. Awesome stuff. Listen to Dark Side of the Moon through, for example. Incredible.

There is alot more than two types of rock... I prefer the modern bands myself. Three Doors Down, Gorillaz, Red Hot Chilli Pepers...

Hissss. I see your modern rock and raise you Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow, ...
There is some good modern rock, though. Mostly alternative.

I like both the new ones, Gorillaz and the Red Hot chilli Peppers and the older ones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, have quite a few tracks of each band.
