Ok, well I just did a assignment on religeon and I noticed something, Im looking for all you guys opinion on this.
Well, you know how Marids are water, djinni are fire and air, and golems are earth.
Well spirits are summoned by a pentacle, in neo-paganism each point of the pentacle refers to either fire, water earth air and spirit.
What Im wondering is are there any spirit.......spirits.

Technically, golems aren't spirits, any more than a car is. They are constructs with only magicians magic inside them, no trapped entities.
And afrits are fire. Djinn appear to combine two. Which doesn't make a huge amount of sense if you think of the pentacle is Wiccan (which it isn't. The pentagram is an ancient symbol otherwise known as the Seal of Solomon sometimes used in pentacles, which are protective devices to guard the wearer against supernatural enemies). So, in short, I don't think that Jonathan Stroud was thinking of neo-paganism when he was writing the books.

Pentacles are ancients symbols, first concieved by the Greeks as the symbol of Aphrodites (Venus charted a perfect pentacle in the sky every 12 years), later by Solomon as his seal, afterwards it became a pagan symbol, a protection against maligant spirits. During Constantine's time it was branded demonic and percecuted. In the Dark ages, it was still used by surviving pagans, afterwards, it was used bby many cults during the renaisance. It was finally popuralized in the World war, being painted on Sherman Tanks and Mustangs. Today, it's a multi meaning symbol, not easy to pin down.

In the trilogy, pentacles could have a point for each type of spirit: Imp, Foliot, Djinn, Afrit, and Marid.

What about higher spirits, then?

Well, with some NEO-PAGAN forms, (yeah yeah I know he probably wasnt thinking about it but......) each part of the star was A I U E O, and on the inner part (damn it cant think of the name of the damn shape), was see, hear, touch, taste, smell, see. Well anyhoo, its just one perception of the pentacle.
