I am beyond tired of people saying he's a prodigy because he wrote Eragon when he was 15. So what? How old was he when he actually published it, 17? Which leaves 2 years of editing. He spent a month on devising it and god knows when he actually started writing it. I'll say only about a year or two, since it is an epic, and since he's homeschooled and basically sheltered he has enough time to write...that leaves 3 to 4 years when he probably has nothing better to do.

That leaves time to read plenty of books to absorb some of the medieval culture...some dragon lore...to devise a few metaphors...and the dialogue is rather idiotic and seems made up on the spot...most people can make a good book in three and a half years, people just seriously overrate it because we have his word he wrote it at age fifteen.

With the media playing upon the idea of a sheltered, youthful homeschooled child writing a novel, I bet a good deal of his fans are biased just by the thought 'hey, a kid can write a book!' and so they won't judge him for what he deserves to be judged as. He self-published it, with only the biased views of his friends and family to say he is good. He was lucky for Knopf to find him, and with a superior marketing plan was able to spread the prospect of 'YES, YOU ARE YOUNG AND YOU TOO CAN BECOME FAMOUS, EVEN THOUGH ALMOST EVERYONE WHO THINKS THEY ARE A GOOD WRITER ARE NOTHING AT ALL'.

Have your own opinion...but the guy is trash in my eyes.

His fanbase consists of morons who can not back up the reason they like him --- wait, is it because...they like Lord of the Rings and all of those other books he blatantly steals from? You do not know who I am nor what I have accomplished...

You're trying to tell me to evade him if I don't like him? Do you honestly think I'm jealous? Just because of the shallow-minded dolts you probably hang out with are jealous of people who are more famous/better than them, don't impose what you think you're knowledgeable about onto others. As a matter of fact, there are a few things that separate me from Paolini: 1.) I can actually make my own plot, 2.) I can write and expound on that plot, 3.) I don't throw in distracting romance crap that holds no relevance, though I suppose it's possible something will come of that trainwreck Paolini considers 'Eragon's love'.

I hate it when people like you come to my threads...contribute or leave.

As a side note, on the subject of what author is better than who...expound on your writing and actually look at the up-to-date style of the person you're trying to call 'envious of Paolini's talent'.

I liked the first book the first time I read it but about a year later I looked at it and went, "I liked this?" It's not great writing. Just a great marketing scheme.

Yeah he rips off Lord of the rings and Star Wars but does that make it "Killer read, don't read it, it will destroy you."? Monster, abomination, fiend, whatever, is better suited. I get annoyed with most people's fanbases and I can understand why they idolize the person if they'd present an actual reason. Really though, if/when I become famous, I'm going to ring Paolini's doorbell and punch him in the jaw. I'd be fine with him if he'd actually step up his game instead of stubbornly saying 'I don't care what anyone else thinks about my books'.

But that won't happen. You may "want" that to happen but it won't. I've only worked on my book for a year now, stopping for awhile to do other things, you know socialize and such. Yes, Eragon is crap. All the fuss of 'he wrote when fifteen' falls flat when you read Eldest. Which is still crap and he wrote it when 20.

And my argument for Eragon:

Eragon is, strangely, 2 dimenstional. I mean he's the arch typical 'hero who just wants to go back to farming.' Hell, Paolini made Sappihra look 2D. And impressive feat.
I mean their not exactly like the Suicidal stuart of Gondor or the tortured observer of the Waste Land. Their Arch Typical. The characters fall into the good team or the bad team. And you know who will win against all odds.... The political intergue doesn't belong. It looks like out of some spy novel...
But the failing flaw is that it simply doesn't compare to the source matiriel: The Lord of The Rings is hell better.

Advice: Don't read Eragon. Re-read Lord of the Rings. (Or if you haven't read it yet, I shouldn't be talking to you.)

But he was picked up by at least one publisher, and it is a best seller. To be honest i hear more good things about it than bad things.

Threatening language? The only threatening part of this is where I said 'I'll kill you'. Anyone who actually takes a threat like that seriously needs to just log off the internet. i don't mind Paolini he isn't that bad

surely he only wants people to buy the book and read it - so he makes money - even if people read it to laugh at or to enjoy, either way he benefits. Also if someone who hasn't read the books miught read this thread and wish to see if the books are as bad as you make out and therefore they are supporting the books and Paolini even more.

Any publisity is good!
