Magician levels

Answered Questions
Dear Jonathan,

1: What level magician was Nathaniel in the third book?

2: What level magician was Gladstone was he a high level magicain or did all his power stem from the staff and he was achally a middle ranking magician?

Thankyou very much for answering my questions and obviously writing the books! :D
Hi Pinksushi,

Thanks for your question. It's a tricky one to answer, because I'm not sure about the exact specifications of each magician's level. They probably have a complex hierarchy of attainments, rather as the demons have their own hierarchy, but I've never tried to tabulate it formally. What tends to happen is that the magicians compare themselves against their peers, grading themselves in power accordingly. By that specification, and acknowledging that the London magicians are by no means as powerful a group as some of the great magicians of the past, Nat is pretty high up in Book III. Only Whitwell approaches his raw talent; Bart perceives his potential right at the start of book I. He would find a high-ranking place among magicians at any historical period.

As for Gladstone, he is more powerful still. Probably he is the most powerful magician of recent centuries; it was his skill, stamina and raw power that enabled him to construct the Staff, which is still a supremely potent weapon a century or more later. He's probably in the all-time top 20.

Sorry not to be more specific!

All the best,

Jonathan
