So, suggestions? Mac? Microsoft? Old? New? Price?

A Windows Laptop ftw. I would recomend Acer for any kind of laptop, reasonable price and very good specs. Hwever if you dont need a powerful machine why not get a UMPC/Netbook - very cheap but might do all you want it to do.

Yeah. Well, my Macbook runs about ten times faster than any windows computer I've ever been on. Depends what you have to spend.
If you can, get linux.

There is no issue with Vista, that isn't equalled on XP or OSX. Have you really used VIsta or are you going o what you have heard/seen in the media?

Well, I heard things before I got a chance to try it, and those things were largely negative. But convince me otherwise and we shall see.

my macbook is ancient but still runs faster than most of the pc laptops ive used.

I strongly advise against any laptop unless you absolutely have to. Unreliable pieces of crap, all of them. (Even Abel's precious macbooks)
For portability, get an Asus Eee or something equivalent. They've got less bits to go wrong than most laptops and if they do go wrong they're cheaper to replace.

Some of the Dell laptops allow you to buy a version of Vista that's actually XP, with an upgrade-to-Vista disk, I believe. Though I suspect it's more expensive.
