Jessica Whitwell

Ptolemy's Gate
Does not get the recognition she deserves.
That is all.

Erm...doesn't this go into the General Discussion?
And I think we should elaborate a little more....
Though yes, she doesn't get all the recognition she deserves....
Wait, you mean in the novel, or by fans? 'Cause both ways she's very notable.
Ahem.
I meant how she was the only one (apart from Nat etc) to stand up to Nouda and his cronies

Yeah Whitwell, (though still essentially an evil magician) was pretty cool.

One thing about the series I do find interesting is the importance of relatively minor characters. Without Whitwell's little fight, Nat and Kitty wouldn't have been able to escape.
Without Amanda in the first, Bart wouldn't have been able to distract Lovelace long enough to steal the amulet.

Just one of many small things I find interesting about the series that really add up when you put them together.
Yeah, Whitwell's distraction helped Nat and Kitty excape but......i still dont like her. lol.

Kinda hard to like her, isn't it?

It is... but then again, she is immensely powerful.

Sometime in the first book, I think they mentioned that she destroyed a Marid by means of a Void. That means she has to power to summon an entity, or tap into a realm, more powerful than the marid itself.

How cool is that?

I certainly agree, Jessica Whitwell deserves a little more recognition. Her coldness is derived (as was "John Mandrake"'s) from her early abandenment and the fact that you either lose your emotions or your life in the government. I also believe that she, despite her betrayal of Nathaniel, did continue to keep a small eye on him, as perhaps evidenced by her sacrifice at Whitehall. Equally importantly, she was the only magician who actually lived up to their ideals: she gave her life for her country.
"I am Bartimaeus! I am Sakhr al-Jinni, N'gorso the Mighty and the Serpent of Silver Plumes! I have rebuilt the walls of Uruk, Karnak and Prague. I have spoken with Solomon. I have run with the buffalo fathers of the plains. I have watched over Old Zimbabwe till the stones fell and the jackals fed on its people."

While a very cool lady, I've gotta disagree with a couple of points.

Err...evidence from the text please. From what I remember of PG it said something like 'they regarded each other with mutual distain.' (Can't quote exactly cuz I don't have a copy with me but I know it was somewhere in the beginning during a council meeting in Nat's POV.)

I think it was more the ideals of her dignity than any nationalism. Like, 'If I'm gonna go, it will be with panache dammit!'

Somewhat off topic but isn't it kinda weird how Nat emulates the style of magicians he's enemies with? Like he had this major beef with Lovelace for a long time but then kinda adopts his mannerisms in GE and in PG he's already long severed ties with Whitwell but he also goes with her unextravagant way of not decorating his council chair or being all blinged out. Well, okay I'm sure he's enemies with most magicians in general but weren't those two a little higher on the hate list?

She didn't keep an eye on him- he was neither friend nor foe, they're mutual disdain (you got that right) and the councils were pretty much the only connection between the two.
The chair thing was more ideals than anything else; I'll concede that Whitewell probably rubbed off on him at least that much.
And I also agree on your explanation of her 'sacrifice.'
She was going to resist from the beginning to the quick end that followed.
And she did, at least, go out with a bang.
