Though he kind of blocked out his childhood/upbringing.

Even though he tried to forget, it was still a part of him. It was his morals and his conscience. He could never block it all out.

If he'd stayed as Nat, a lot more commoners would have liked him. But the rest of the gov't would have used him so much. Nat's too childlike.
