We get most of the history of BTF universe through the eyes of Barti and he does not really keep up to date on human affairs. And he did say he was locked up in a jam jar or something for a while.

I believe Lockwood takes place in the 80s or 90s and BTF takes place 100 years later in a steampunk style future. By this time, people have uncovered the research of their Egptian/Greek ancestors (in Lockwood, spirits were known to turn up in the past) and they've figured out why ghosts suddenly because more common in the 50s and learned to control that.

And magicians are chosen as orphans because society is sorta influenced by the period of their history where parents used to dump their talented children off at an agency.

Back on topic, I kinda like the headcanon presented in the fic above, of birthdays being treated like demotions. Or even a death sentence really, depending on how invested the kid is in their career.

I mean when you think about it, a lot of these kids are spending so much time into a career they're eventually going to grow out of, and most of them don't spend as much time on their schooling as they should because of said careers so...I dunno, it's kind of sad when you think about it.

I dunno, but I think they did the career to pay for their family to get a better life than the one they live (mind you, I haven't read the book)
