I read The Golden Compass/Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass, and I plan to watch the movie.

I've read all of them and plan to skip the movie, even if it were a choice between that and Pretty Princess Ponies 4: The Magical Skip Rope.

The first two were original, breath-taking, and cleverly written. The third one was a piece of evidence to why authors should know how to end their stories on a climax that doesn't fall flat.

I loved them. They were completely original, the characters inspired and the book was written beautifully. Pullman is an amazing author.

Personally I can't wait to see the movie. It looks excelent, good set design and such. Not to mention amazing casting - they got Lyra and Sam perfect, and I'm a huge daniel craig fan. I especially like the looks of the amoured bear, his voice is spot on.
There is a sort of busy worm,
That will the fairest book deform,
Their tasteless tooth will tear and taint
The poet, patiot,sage or saint,
Nor sparing wit nor learning.
Now, if you'd know the reason why,
The best of reasons I'll supply;
'Tis bread to this poor vermin.

I watched a trailer. I actually laughed at the first appearance of the armoured bear. It moves so unnaturally. I can see why they'd not want to do motion capture on a real polar bear, though...

 Not supposed to be like a normal bear. In the book in says it runs by moving its two left feet, then its two right. Sort of like scissors.

But it still looks ridiculous. Some animals move like that, but not like the bear in the trailer.

Hmm, yeah.
I think Nicole Kidman will be really good as Mrs. Coulter.
Liked the first one, didn't like the next two.
Oh wow, Pretty Princess Ponies 4? I'm excited. You never know what hideously pink-patterned ponies can do with a skip rope.
Look, Queezle.

I really enjoyed them. I guess I'll probably go and see the movie. Did anyone else get to see the theatre production a few years ago? That was breath-taking.

Sssh...don't spoil the plot for Pretty Princess Ponies VIII: The Rollerblade Escapade.

Back on topic, I don't even know there was a theater production.

As for the bears in the movie, I too did laugh. Of course, my friends ever regret going to see a movie with me because the trailer came on and in hushed tones for forty-five minutes I lectured them on the failings of Pullman's work.

I haven't finished the first book. <_<
I've been to preocupied with other books. It looks okay, though. The way the keep talking with purposeful spelling errors annoys me to death, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I loved the first one, but the other ones aren't as good. I still think Pullmans a really good author.

Oh, his books are written with A+ style.

The problem is his storytelling is more of a D- after the imaginative first book. I honestly think that he had no idea of how he would end it, except making a statement about organized religion. The characters became puppets, the pace dragged, and pointless things popped up at a rapid speed.

Yes, I am.

But that does not get in the way of me enjoying literature for literature's sake. I loved Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Memoirs of a Geisha, and many other books, most that my church hate.

If you haven't noticed, I get annoyed when books, such as Frank Peretti's books, get overly preachy. I honestly don't care about the theme of the book, if it is well-written and more about the characters and their journey than the author's intent.

This is simply my opinion and I wasn't really offended. Your opinion may differ and that's cool. I just call it how I see it.

It is a good series. I think the film will never compare. If they make a bad film and ruin the series, I will personally be responsible for the deaths of everyone involved.

I agree with everyone; the movie will suck as usual, no director has really made anything worth comparing to the novel. In fact, the Airborn writer has denied the script because it was so horribly written. Why can't all authors do that?
Yup, the first book was great and the second one okay. But the third...makes me wonder how it stayed on the bestseller list for 6 months. Its like making a pyramid and suddenly screwing up the top bit. Doesn't look good.

I totally agree with that. I really didn't like the later books, especially after the "dark matter is conscious" part. I liked the first one though.

The trailer refers to the Magisterium wanting to control other worlds, and there being no Magisterium in other worlds, just to hide the fact that they are selling anti-religionist movies to American kids. It's the Church trying to control the world, and I'm sure there's a church in this world. They missed the point of the book I think.
I wish I were a cat-dragon
It would be fine if it was written, or screenplay done by the author. Pity that never happens, except in holes.
They're ging to spoil it, aren't they.
Hrrrrmmm.
