yeah...really shouldnt be doing this...but....

I have Chemistry in for tomorrow. Lots of it.

I need to do a 5 min presentation on the advantages and disadvantages of modern materials over traditional ones. Anyone know anything?

BTW not asking anyone to google or stuff like that. Just things off the tops of your heads would be great.

Thanks!

bugger. no one is on line anymore.

I'm actually in uni in chemistry but this is a prety random topic, what type of materials I guess you could say that traditionnal materials were cheaper and found in nature. so there is the cost. The properties of these element have been furtherreserched so you have more to base your lab results on. They are less dangerous because they are found naturally, therefore you know non-toxic bla bla bla. For example we used coal instead of uranium before. There was a lot less cancer. And so on and so forth
I am Bartimaeus, Sakhr al-Jinni!! I am N'gorso the Mighty, and the SERPENT OF SILVER PLUMES!! I have spoken with Solomon, and rebuilt the walls of Uruk, Karnak and Prague!!

Thank you, i might actually have a chance! I know it doesnt have much to do with chemistry...but our teacher hasnt realised that. Anyone got anything else?

Thank you thank you thank you! Youve saved me from a terrible painful death.

Well, ain't this random and vague.

And that is stupid.

How modern exactly? You can say, Aluminium, is generally more suited for it's intended tasks than good ol Iron. You can not make a Iron aircraft. Modern matirials would be better than something you found laying around in a forest, Platanium is hell of a lot stronger than copper...

And how does this even remotely relate to chemistry? Hell, even Science at general?

Erm no? Firstly using Uranium in reactors doesn't actually increase the rate of cancer seeing as reactors don't give off radiation to the environment, usually. And using coal would increase cancer because of breathing in all the crap it gives off.

...and Uranium is found naturally...

Ask your teacher the exact relevance of this to the subject at large.

its a new science GCSE thing, we take exams this year, then those are forgotten and we take more the next. its all really stupid. stuff we learn had nothing to do with the actual subject. something about getting british children more interested in science. biology has become all about health eating and not getting pregnant. physics is the only one that is staying the same.

You do chemistry at uni and you claim that natural materials aren't toxic but man-made ones are?
Let's think.
Mercury, arsenic, lead, cyanides, halogens. Five entirely natural elements/groups/compounds that are toxic, in the space of the five seconds I'm prepared to spend here.

And chemistry is at the mercy of these stupid activities? You have my pity.

Granite. Releases radon gas which is highly radioactive and can kill if allowed to build up.
