...trying to feed the huskies, when this one growled at me... yellow eyes...
...she's not alive. Not with that amount of blood on the floor...
...we're trapped here...
... did I just hear a cat?...
...She's turning around. She's looking at me... She- she's not... human..
...What are you doing with the ice saw?...
...I'm so sorry. Goodbye...
The two remaining wolves left the station soon after tearing the final human scientist to shreds. The rescue helicopter arrived in the spring, fearing the worst based on the final messages recieved from the base. The found several well-preserved corpses, some human, others... not so much. Audio diaries and security footage revealed a grim and fantastical truth.
Official word from the government was that the researchers had turned on each other, driven mad by the cold and the dark. There was no point in scaring the public, at least not until the "wolves" could be captured and controlled. This tale was believed by all but a few, conspiracy theorists who were given little attention. Government agents were dispatched to work secretly in settlements where the wolves were likely to have traveled. But they never found them. Time passed, and the sad tale of the arctic researchers faded into history, little more than a footnote alongside more significant events.
The wolves pressed on, using their inhuman strength and endurance to leave Antarctica and swim to an island in the South Atlantic. By day they formed grand plans, wanted to use their "gifts" to strike terror into the hearts of others and gain power.
However, successive moonrises began to take their toll. As the weeks passed, their bodies and minds became more animal. The petty ambition and rage of human beings began to fade away, replaced by animal instincts. They began to kill less out of madness, and more for simple survival, until the day when the wolf took over completely. Assimilated into the local packs, the curse remained dormant for a time. Had the former scientists lived out their lives undisturbed and passed on of natural causes, it may have disappeared completely.
It was not to be. Wolf meat was a delicacy among the islanders, to be eaten on special feast days. One day, one of several wolves brought back by hunters had a familiar, almost Nathan Fillion-esque set to its jaw...
TL; DR? It's that time again, ladies and gentlemen!
Wow, that's the first bit of fiction I've written in years. In other news, I think I fail biology forever.
