This country is going to lead the world in a few decades. It's going to become the largest economy in a decade or two & I am sure (with its current spending) its military strength would overtake that of any country.
But the very fact that it isn't democratic is scary. It has all the signs of being an imperialistic nation & tends to support other non democratic & 'rogue' nations. Worst, it doesn't need to answer its own citizens. Possibly, we will be seeing many Bushes in future who cannot be voted out.

Bah. Never got to type it properly. But I need to go now.

America has an attitude of an imperialist. Yet you don't seem to be frightened; simply because it's a democracy?

While China is not exactly better, simply because it's not democratic is not the main reason to be wary of its growing strength. All nations with the appropriate leaders can hide itself from the world, not answer to its citizens, and support "non democratic and rogue nations". America is rumored to support "rogue" nations. It answers to it citizens because the citizens have power. While many leaders do sincerely care for America, true intentions can never truly be known.

Essentially, all powerhouses are empires: Britain, Rome, American, and soon China. All nations look for power. My fear is not that they'll commit all of these fears of yours; it's that China doesn't seem to care as much for their public image as America. America had already become the leader of the world; it has had the largest economy of the world (and still does), and still has a massive army. China will be just like America. Only with the supposed mistreatment of the citizens.

Um, no. You cannot call a country that stifles certain freedoms essential to a free nation "The United States of America, V.2"

China is no longer a true communist country; it is slowly turning democratic. We should not worry too much of China; instead, let's call it: The United States of America, V.2
I admit the United States is not a sterling example of a true democracy & is very imperialistic, but China (in that aspect) is far worse. I agree its become more democratic in recent years, but still the people the voice of the people there are very much suppressed. Vocal pro-democracy supporters are found murdered the next day. And the government blocks the net frequently, fudges information & forces its people to do many things. Its support for North Korea, the military junta in Myanmar, the Maoists in Nepal & the army in Pakistan is well known.

It's a fact that democratic nations are far more trustworthy & no two democracies have ever gone to war. Trust me, US would be 10 times worse if it wasn't a democracy. I agree, China has definitely become far more responsible & far less oppressive in recent years. But is that enough? If China was in the place of US, Bush would still be in power, the voices of all those opposing his policies would be squashed (they would either get the death sentence or be put in jail) & the leaders would continue to do as they please.

It would be better for the world & China if the country took a democratic path instead of an autocratic one.

Perhaps not, but the main point I wanted to put up was how similar China was to America.

@N&B
While I do know the repressed freedoms that China has put on its citizens to keep itself secret and in power, and that a democratic path is more reliable, it's not as if any government does not erase its citizens from the Earth; my point I'm trying to make is that the crimes of democratic nations seem to be manipulated if they are somehow released at all. Democratic nations simply seem less oppressive, and are in comparison to China.

While citizens can speak out anything without the threat of being arrested and murdered, if someone has information, dirt, on the government, the government, breaking international rules, will bribe or erase the threat. In a war, the winner gets to write history (I'm sure the Allies had committed its own fair share of inhumane decisions in WWII; yet do we hear about it?) and erase its own evils, for it may break standards of the Geneva Treaty (e.g. Civilians in a war zone). To think that countries, democratic or not, will not silence its own citizens, or block the net, for its own safety or dignity is naive.
In spite of all you mentioned, democratic countries have far more transparency. Tell me, have you ever heard of scandals (like Watergate) getting exposed in non-democratic countries? There are so many other examples. Plus there is the Opposition, always ready to point the flaws of the government & make political gains. And the media [yes, I know the government sometimes stifles the media(esp during wars), but it is rare]. And the ruling party cannot do whatever it wants- it needs a two third majority to be passed in the parliament. And you can always vote out the incumbent government.

I highly agree with these following points. I just wanted to point out that it is unfair to put so much on China when all countries have their own scandals.
But that's the point, right? When other countries can have their scandals exposed & find it difficult to do things which are blatantly wrong as they need approval for all their actions, the government of a non-democratic country has no such qualms. So if China is to become a world power (as it surely will) it is expected of it to act responsibly & thoughtfully. US (for all its democracy) has failed in this miserably, so China will find it all the more tougher.

My brain hurts too much for an argument. Mmm, sangria.

You are allowed to have Sangria? It's wine, right?
