Q: If all is connected as one, does "it" have a specific gender?

When Bartimeaus talks about names being the "ultimate restriction", while they have no names in the "other place".

Q:If everything is one in the "other place", and there is no difference between spirits, how do individuals get summoned without others going too(when they have no names to specify who is wanted)?

The summoning is basically severing a certain spirit off from another.

Like if you cut off your hand. It used to be part of one big entitiy. Now it's a separate piece of flesh lying on the floor while you bleed to death.

Once a spirit has been summoned, it's partially separated from the rest of the Other Place, so that section of it can always be summoned again.

The summoning horn, when created, made Ramuthra by cutting off his essence from the rest of the Other Place.

So even though they are all one, they have different essences? Kind of like a family, (say the stroud family-example) If: him and his siblings all have the last name, Stroud, but they all have differnet spirits and opinions, so they are one but their own at the same time.?

They didn't say that did they? If not, then that's an interesting observation. Have a . Anyways I agree with what everyone else said. When a spirit is "born" from the essence forms into what that piece of essence sees fit (except for its rank, which is probably based on the strength of the summoning).

We know that there's a segment of the essence that remains connected to that "being" or "soul"; because otherwise a spirit could be instantly healed by returning to the other place, and we know that they have SOMEWHAT separate minds from kitty's journey there. So theyre totally one but theyre also not, it's the kind of paradox that exists on the other side, something we can't really comprehend because of the fact that it's not of our world.

I think that a part of them is permanatly severed from the O.P. the moment they're summoned, that's how their memories don't all merge.
If Kitty or Ptolemy stayed there untill their body had died, would they become a spirit?

they would be something like that, but never "real" spirits, because they don't have essence and they are, well, just not from there (you remember kitty abhoring when she came to OP)

No spirit has a gender, but their voice and preferred gender form sorta distributes them into magician books.
