Cats and Auras

General Discussion
The bit about cats and auras reminds me of how in the Discworld series, only cats and wizards can see Death.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Cats are commonly associated with warding off demons...and several other books of magic happen to contain pentacles --- Lesser Key of Solomon would be one. It's just a matter of personal preference, I suppose. What other method is there for summoning demons that you have encountered?

The three ships. Kinda like the Mayflower and all those.

In one book, they simply shouted out words.

And of course the rubbing of the lamp.

There are others, but I have to go. Bus. Crud.

Have a nice morning.

Oh, and I think Eragon did it differently, I should check again.

Ha, my sister is late so we get driven to school.

Ok, right naming some more now:

There has also been the case where they use an altar/special clothes/ect. to attract the spitit.

Note: These aren't all fantasy books, I've come across them in books about people's culture.

where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
set Gryffindors apart."

Krim shall tell you about demonology.

Rubbing of the land releases a demon that has already be summoned and bound to it. That's the same as Nathaniel putting on the mercenary's boots and claiming he just summoned the djinn inside. Eragon doesn't really even mention spirits in depth, I don't believe, other than the fact that the Shade was one and that's how he became what he was. It didn't give the specifics. Where did you get the altar from? There is always the chance that there is a pentagram inside of the altar anyway, and plus, you're reading fantasy books --- Stroud probably wanted it the authentic and common ceremonial style. The fancy special clothes you're talking about tend to be associated with ceremonies to invoke demons, and includes things such as robes and mitres.

Actually, some state that the Goetic demons that are summoned are actually functions of the mind, and a mixture of their name being heard, perfumes, and other factors. Even though Stroud didn't use any of the demons by name and did not expound on the 'demons are thoughts' part, which states that it is more of a metaphorical way of summoning that increases the capacity for business sense, aka wisdom, and things of the sort.

Or, if you're writing about that sort of thing, you can make it up as you go along and not bother to research all the lamp-rubbing.
