But according to MuggleNet's creator, a long time ago in an interview JKR said that the trio would live through the series. That was at a bookshop when someone asked her a question before the books really took off...

It's not as bad as Nathaniel. Once you get past Nathaniel's death, other main character deaths seem so...not as important to me. Unless it'd be Artemis Fowl.
