What might be interesting is if Bartimaeus is actually the spirit of Nathaniel. Think about the 3 books. Stroud makes a point of how Nathaniel is cold and calculating and without spirit. Then at the end of the book Bartimaeus is fused with Nathaniel. Their bond is uniquely harmonious compared to the other hybrids (partly because Barti doesn't take over Nat's brain). Metaphorically speaking, Nathaniel regains his soul or "spirit" when Barti joins him at the end...
