I'm a big Bartimeaus fan and I just wanted to confirm 2 things.

1) Since there is an abundance of magic, how come technology has improved so much in the Bartimeaus universe? Technology like electricity and cars and engines would be hard to come by if the Magicians made the demons do all the work.

2) Why don't the magicians bind the demons to do the mundane work instead of handing it out to the commoners? For example: Julius Tallow handed his books to be bound by the commoners. He could have easily instructed Nemaides to do so. The imps are already carrying messages for the magicians, why can't they bind the books for them as well??

But isn't summoning demons very dangerous? I mean, in the forward it says if a magician can go through his career summoning only a mite, than all the better for him. It takes energy, concentration, and a great deal of risk of risk to summon a demon - so might as well get the commoners to do all the work...

Good point. Also, don't magicians always use mundane objects instead of a spirit?
