A possible mistake concern

Thanks for answering my last questions again.

I was reading Amulet of Samarkand again when I realized that the mercenary didn't notice that the grocer was really Bartimaeus. However, in PG he tells Nat that he sees all seven planes.

Was he over exaggerating or was this a mistake?

Thanks again,

Ianna

Hi Ianna,

Hmmm... I confess I shifted a bit uncomfortably when I read your question, but after a bit of thought I can justify this discrepancy by arguing that while the mercenary certainly does have extensive powers to see the planes, he may not be as consistent and perfect at doing it as a djinni like Bart. There may well be times when things get past him - and the grocer was one such example! I imagine it's a bit like knowing a language: if you're born to it, you know it perfectly; if you learn it in later life, there will always be gaps and weaknesses. The djinn see the planes without effort; the mercenary has to concentrate, and sometimes will miss things.

Hope that sounds convincing!

All the best,

it does sound ... pretty convincing, really.

That question was already discussed, asked and then answered previously. Just letting you know.

Sorry, I was tired. I thought someone was asking the same question again.

That's how tired I was. I thought someone had asked the same question, and Stroud had given the same answer.
