Me! We will put an end to human race altogether! That ought to be fun. The ad I am getting now- Adapting to a climate change (www.america.gov) Interesting. |

Since the forum seems a little dead these days, I thought I will bring this out: http://green.ndtv.com/ It is a news channel here. What it is basically is doing is, running a 24 hour non-stop programme on creating awareness and collecting money for the initiative "lighting a billion lives". There are scores of villages in India (I think 333,000 plus) which have absolutely no electricity. The people in these villages either use kerosene lamps after it becomes dark or just go to bed. Kerosene lamps are costly and they cause pollution and are pretty toxic to those handling them. So this initiative collects money and buys solar lamps for the villages. They actually install a solar panel in every village and gives every household a solar lamp. The villagers need to deposit their lamps for charging in the money and collect it in the evening. NDTV and Toyota ran this programme last year too and they collected enough money (over $436,870) to light 55 villages. This time I am pretty sure they would cross that figure. Apart from ordinary citizens, celebrities and CEO's contributing, you also have painters auctioning their paintings and runners/bikers either running/riding through cities to collect money. And chief ministers of every state in the country take a pledge to move towards a greener environment and you have people coming to clean beaches and recycle plastic etc. What I also like is that it involves a lot of schoolchildren and creates a lot of awareness. |

Sounds really cool. It seems a lot more extensive than any environmental programs we have here. |

But the main theme is about lighting villages up. Though through solar power. This time, about 160 villages have been lit up . That means a cool 200,000 to 1 million people will get power now. It is a drop in the ocean but at least someone is doing something. The government should be ashamed.

This was the first sentence I saw, and I immediately thought you meant setting villages on fire >> |
