They were reading off a list of candidates though, weren't they?

Sorry . . . ?
When I set out from the boy's attic window, my head was so full of competing plans and complex strategems that I didn't look where I was going and flew straight into a chimney.

I think Sent is talking about the magicians who were called forth from a list before their bodies were taken up by the demons. Nouda monitored the whole thing, didn't he?

Nouda and co had a list of spirits they were picking off for the magicians to summon into themselves, were they not?

By what Faquarl said to Whitewell, it seems to be slightly improvised.

Though all the names do seem to come from the same book I believe...

There would definately be books with the names of existing demons in them, so that magicians could use them, obviously. I think Faquarl was selecting spirits pretty much at random from the book, by the way it's written in PG.

Mmhmm.
Undoubtably, they would be choosing higher-level spirits, in order to have a more powerful army.
If anyone needs proof of such a book, read the scene in GE where Mandrake summons Bart.
He mentions it there.

I said books, not one book. And there's no need for proof, it's undoubtedly true that such books do exist in the Bartimaeus Trilogy. Although, they may not be entirely accurate or complete. This is what the magician Button was talking about in PG, he wanted to compile a list of all surviving demons. I agree with the choosing higher spirits thing, though.

Ok... so.
They had a book.
And they pick from the book.

Well . . . yes, in essence. Pardon the vague pun.

Vague puns ftw.

However, that pun does not make any sense with the alternate meaning of "essence", while most puns do.
"Give me back my face!" "Look at that sunset. Like blood and melted cheese."
