Aye, I don't think water agrees with djinni and afrits. Presumably marids would be alright, being water spirits...

He was an afrit on the ninth level and that made him quite mighty yes, well at leats compared to most other afrits and djinns. The reason that he almost drowned was that his essence was weakened by water as he is a fire spirit. Just as Bartimaeus a being of air unlikes being underground greatly. And yes at least according to old islamic traditions Marids are spirits of the water and their hair is said to be moving like underwater.

I believe Barti briefly describes marids as "powerful water spirits" in the books, too.
