I was going to lend my intelligent comments to this wonderful discussion. When I realized. KRIM STOLE MY ARGUEMENT. (Good job, anyway.) You can so feel Paolini was trying to make Eldest so profound. But does he? If you have half a mind, no. And the occasional archaism is annoying. Very. And guard? If you think he made his base matiriels (LotR) 'Ten times better', you need a shrink. |

Woo. Flame war. We need some ice here. We won't really gain anything by flaming. On lighter note, it's always funny reading the titles to his chapters: " Mandrake Root and Newt's Tongue " " Magic is the Simplest Thing " " Of Reading and Plots " XDDDD;;; Funny chapters. I found the book overall a little simple. It's not like it's a bad book, but I've seen books that follow the same story line, or better, ( dragon books are always a little predictable ) get almost no popularity at all. I think it was just by chance that it became so popular. I don't think it's a book I'd see an adult reading. However, the point Krim made about how the books are WAY too thick for the content it holds, I'd agree that people think that the thicker the better. Have you seen J.K. Rowling's books lately? WAY THICK. I don't think her latest book really should've been that thick, it wasn't all that eventful. I'm currently reading Naomi Novik's dragon series at the moment, myself. XD;; |

" Tsuki says: YOU TALK A LOT. T_T Charla says: Is that all you have to say to the great and wonderful Charla? T_T Tsuki says: ... yes. Charla says: Very well. you are dismissed. * waves hanky * XD You know I want to roleplay Trickster as a djinni. Tsuki says: Idon'tcareomg. >>> " -My lovely friend and myself having a conversation. XDDD That managed to amuse me.- | |

Do you know what a scientologist actually is? Read this. On the subject of thick books, there are some very amusing comments about that in the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams spends about three pages describing Arthur getting to bed in minute detail, then comments that while it makes for nice thick books that the american market thrives on, it isn't actually very interesting. The Inheritance trilogy aren't brilliant, sure, but I still read them. But then, I can't avoid finishing series I start unless they're truely awful. That's why I still read Harry Potter... |

I couldn't be bothered to dig up a decent source. The overview and basic beliefs sections are accurate, and all that's really important here. |

Anyway, Eragon is crap. Who agrees me? "You are entitled to your opinions. But not your facts." Said some random person. |

One of these narrow beams lit Fuchsia's forehead and shoulder, and another plucked a note of crimson from her dress. To her right was n enormous crumbling organ. Its pipes were broken and the keyboard shattered. Across its front the labour of a decade of grey spiders had woven their webs into a shawl of lace. (pg. 59, Gormeghast Trilogy omnibus) That's good writing. Here, let me show you a prime example of Paolini trying to sound smart. Silence fell between them as Oromis meticulously disassembled a blackberry, prying out one plump segment at a time. When the last corpuscle vanished between his port-red lips he rubbed his hands flat together. (pg. 279) Not too bad. Could even pass up as good writing, since the words are all big and nice. But it's worthless. You can say all of that, or, 'Oromis ate a blackberry'. And even then, it's worthless prose that needs to be omitted, left in for the sake of 'being good prose'. Even worse: The pitted lunar face was bisected by the horizon and appeared to sit on the ground like a maculated dome as large as a mountain. (pg. 279) aka. The moon had begun to rise. - hits Paolini on the nose with a newspaper. - |

'Oromis eat a Blackberry' isn't exactly Thriller writting. Gotta expand a bit. Anyways, writing I can tolerate. The philosophy, I can not. |

Sure, that can pass, but do you really want to spend twenty or so words describing how someone eats a blackberry? |

This isn't opinion, it's fact. No good writer spends that many words describing something as unimportant as how a person eats a blackberry. |
