People absorb the magic over generations, gaining first resilience, then (very) minor abilities of Spirits, like sight on higher planes.

Like the resistence gained by mosquito's against DDT over the years.

But it does remind me of a certain summer where the flu and West Nile Virus came, which does easily match with the commoners; they were born with certain abilities, from which the magic came leaking into the air and food and drinks the mothers eat/drink; the mosquitoes were born in water, so they got the diseases from leaks in us humans system.

Another good one though I have never heard of it before.

Mightbe that's where JS got the idea from.

Quite probably got an annoying bitch bite and how he had heard about West Nile, got freaked out (quite contrary to Luciene's Hero Stroud) and then used it in his GE book.

Hm, I wonder what other weird ways he came up with ideas?

my mind automatically jumped to bacteria when i read the conversation between Kitty and Bart. if you continue to use the same drugs on bacteria, over time they become resistant i.e. MSRA has anti-biotic / drug resistant strains that are deadly. the same with tuberculosis (also a bacteria); if you discontinue your course of anti-biotics, they have time to become resistant to the drug (and can be passed to others when you cough, hence spreading the resistant strain).

anyway, that's how i always thought of resistance. like bacteria and drugs, if commoners are exposed to magic for long enough they eventually become resistant to its effects.
