Jabor, like Faquarl and Bartimaeus, is a djinni. Just a rather powerful one.

We've seen afrits and higher spirits, but Marids are mentioned.

yeah, that kinda stinks...
'"That's right," I said "Me. What, did you think that I'd be all nice and quiet for you? Think again, sonny. There are two of us in this body now. Check this out."
To prove my point I lifted one of his fingers and methodically picked his nose. He uttered a squawk of protest. "Stop that!"'
I lowered the arm. "That's not all I can do if I put your mind to it"'

Wait a minute, wasn't Ramuthra a Marid? We've seen mites, imps, moulers, foliots, utukkus, horlas, djinni, afrits, Marids and higher demons (Nouda). So yeah, they've mentioned every kind of demon albeit briefly.

is it me or did you just state the ranks for this forum....

anway Ramuthra was NOT a marid, he was jsut some kind of higher spirit,

and on the subject of Faquarl, he seems much more powerful in the third book, perhaps we is like 12th level or soemthing.....anyone know what barti is?, i think hes is fourth...

Ramuthra is definitely a higher spirit.

Faquarl is much more powerful in the third book because SPOILER: he's in Hopkins' body, and demons inside bodies are much stronger because there's no ache building up in their essence. Barti goes from worn out to maximum strength when he's in Nate's body.

It doesn't actually mention a gender for Ramuthra IIRC, but it's easier to call her a she, because most of the other spirits are male.

I just come here and i already seem to be, like, a fountain of imformation for you guys:
1) Honorius told Bartimaeus he was a "Afrit of the ninth level" Judging by the tone that seems to be the highest rank. Bartimaeus is said to be a middling Djinni; which further supports this.
2) Bartimaeus was clearly metontioned as "Linnean ranking: Four, Dangerous." The keyword is linnean ranking. That suggests more ranking systems. Lovelace said Bartimaeus was "a djinni of the fourteenth level" which, i think cements it. Confused? Me too.
3) Djinn, Foliots and Afrits are all taken from Islamic mythology. (See: answers.com) Marids are said to be god-like spirits of water. and i'm inclined to agree with that.
Conclusion:WE NEED A FOURTH BOOK!!
Do i sound obseesed?

Nah, you're just the same as the rest of us :phrank: We really need a new Barti book to read preferably one that touches the subject of demons in more depth.

I guess that each class has ranks, barti is a 14th rankes djinn and honorus is a 9th level afrit which is considerably stronger.

You miss the point: Bartimaeus is refered as Fourth level in most of the book.
PS: i just noticed, i spelled ptolemy wrong. any chance of correcting it?

Either there's more than one ranking system, it's a typo, or forgetfullness on the part of the author (never!).
