An inferno is cast on Kitty at the orders of Makepeace, in the box at the play.

It wasn't an inferno stick. He didn't throw anything at her. Besides, when he raised a hand, the inferno was fired directly at Kitty, not as a blast as you'd expect from an inferno stick.

Indeed. There is no mention of an inferno stick. Unless the french translator took some liberties.

I was also confused by this. We know that spirits can be trapped inside objects as either amulets or talismans, the two main examples being the Amulet of Samarkand and Gladstones Staff, however, there are many examples of magicians having power of their own.

1) Magicians can cast spells directly upon demons. How would this be possible if they themselves did not have some kind of power?
2) In PG, we see Whitwell raise her hand to another minister, and a blue light/flame seems to shine around it, along with a powerful humming noise. Now, as this is Whitwells actual hand, we can assume that there isnt a demon stuck in there, and we can assume that the magic is powerful due to the noise it makes and the other ministers reaction. Another example of Whitwell using magic of her own is when she weaves that net around Nat. I dont think an imp or foliot did that, otherwise Bati would have been able to stop them, no?

Thats all I got.

1. They use the words of power, so to speak. I suppose that they can use infernos/spasms/ect. but don't all the time because it's easier to use items and demons.

2. Correct. It was defintaly her.

Whitwell could still have had an invisible djinni or afrit stood next to her to do the actual work.
The net is an interesting one, though. Perhaps, since it traps spirits as well as humans, it comes under the category of spirit commanding magic, and is therefore something the magicians can do with the correct words? Or maybe there's some object with an imprisoned djinn that can open and close the net at will?

Maybe if Whitewell didn't have any dijinn/afrit bodyguards, it can blast her from behind.
