Magicians can cause pain to spirits in various ways, but I don't think they can attack themselves. Mind you, Whitwell appears to cast a Shield in Gate.

No. The bear Afrit does that.

*nodnod* It's her afrit, not actually her.

I didn't remember it specifically stating that, but it certainly makes most sense.

Possible Spoiler for Gate...

To quote Gate 'Whitwell screamed an order; a shimmering blue Shield rose up around her body' (p 367, American edition)

End Spoiler

I think we can safely assume it was her...But anyways.

"Screamed an order" Not an incantation. an order. Before doing so she had summoned an afrit. 2+2.
Whitewall had used a shield type thing to seal Nathaniel in Book I. No demon there.

She did? Hm, I don't remember that. But it's been forever since I've read that. I always assumed she had ordered her afrit to create a Shield.

The Evidence: :P

AS: (As barti) A web of white threads rose up around us and closed over Nathaniel's head. The women lowered her hand.2

2The threads of a stricture act as a seal. They allow no object (or sound) to escape their cocoon. Its a kind of temporary prison, more usually emplyed om unfortunate humans than on djinn.

That would suggest she created it, as there is no djinn mentioned. However as the footnote says this isnt a shield, more of a temporary prison.

PG OOC (Whitwell has just summonded her afrit.)

Whitwell screamed an order; a shimmering blue shield rose up above her body.

You dont usually order yourself to do something, suggests a djinn.

So thats final :P

There is some info on spells etc in the omnipedia

I dont think that any magician can use magic ythat is not related to a demond. and as to my thread Magic, it is in the trillogy, demonds and characters.
'"That's right," I said "Me. What, did you think that I'd be all nice and quiet for you? Think again, sonny. There are two of us in this body now. Check this out."
To prove my point I lifted one of his fingers and methodically picked his nose. He uttered a squawk of protest. "Stop that!"'
I lowered the arm. "That's not all I can do if I put your mind to it"'

the main ones are detonation wich pulverises with bluish flames, and inferno

there are shields and spasms also who are like dotonations(mwamba) some can shoot spikes and stronger entities shoot pure power

I think a magician can do spells, but it's easier for them to let the spirits do it, so they don't bother.

Look at Makepeace's inferno.

makepeaces inferno was done by a spirit traperd in a wand, they can harm magicaly their slaves because of their power over them but not other humans (without a demon)

Magicians can only use spells on djinn to cause them pain and enslave them. Casting spells like infernos or whatever themselves would mean that they would barely ever summon djinn. Far too difficult to order around, and always trying to kill their masters.
Makepeace presumably had an invisible djinn of some sort with him to cast the inferno. The raised hand was just an order.
