Yeah, English words get weird spellings to retain their pronouncation.

I think that guns and bows take the same amount of skill to aim or what not, but arrows are concentrated in a definated space so you have to be sure to hit the target, where bullets are more spread out with bb's(or however) and aiming isn't as important.

And how exactly is Bartimaeus pronounced?

Have you ever played with those toy bows?

The difference between guns and bows, and it's a crucial difference, is that guns have sights and the bullets always leave the barrel in precisely the same way. Depending on the angle you have an arrow it can go in completely different directions if you don't know what you're doing.

Bar-tim-ay-uss.

Thats one of the ways I pronounced it. But.... this is funny...I am so dumb, through three whole books I pronounced this word wrong that is said in every other paragraph.

I kept reading it as Dee-tone-ay-shun
When it is detonation

I didn't realize until the last chapter of PG

the movie is definately happening!

I know some of you might not wnat to see the books butchered. I personally hope they do it well. I just hope a good looking guy plays Nat and they don't butcher it too much.

But anyway..I was on the official russian bartimaeus site, and it said that Miramax has bought the rights to The Amulet of Samarkand. It's all very hush hush, the site says, and they don't know or won't tell who the actors are yet. but apparently jonathan stroud has commented:

"I was completely shocked. It was one of the turning points of my life. I spent the first half of the year by myself, writing the first book. When I sent the manuscript to different publishers, there was a bigger response than I could have hoped for-bigger than for any of my other books. The director(?) of the company Miramax read the book and expressed interest in buying the rights to the film. "

(the Russian is below, if anyone here is fluent.)

«Я был совершенно шокирован. Это был наиболее поворотный этап в моей жизни. Я провёл первую половину года в уединении, завершая первую книгу и создавая начало «Амулета…». Когда я окончил рассылку рукописи в различные издательства, пошла волна интереса – большего, чем я мог получить в ответ на какую угодно другую мою книгу.. Руководитель компании MIRAMAX прочитал её и выказал заинтересованность в покупке авторских прав на создание фильма!»

of course, i don't know how trustworthy a source this is, but it's better than nothing! If they've told the fans there's a movie, it definately means something.

Oh. My. Holy. Friggn'. God.
I say night I'm living in the forest of my dream,
I know the night is not as it would seem,
I must believe in something,
So I'll make myself believe it,
That this night will never go.

Tell me about it. Tuck everlasting - I don't even want to think about!

But I think that Bartimaeus might be different.
There is a sort of busy worm,
That will the fairest book deform,
Their tasteless tooth will tear and taint
The poet, patiot,sage or saint,
Nor sparing wit nor learning.
Now, if you'd know the reason why,
The best of reasons I'll supply;
'Tis bread to this poor vermin.
